The officers claimed he possessed illegal drugs and resisted arrest, allegedly attacking them with a knife and attempting to throw a grenade, leading them to fatally shoot Chaiyaphum. However, local villagers who witnessed the incident tell a different story&mdash;they say Chaiyaphum was beaten by the soldiers and shot from behind while trying to flee. Among these conflicting testimonies, nine CCTV cameras recorded the incident, but when the case reached court, all footage had mysteriously vanished without a trace. Chaiyaphum&#39;s death sent shockwaves through indigenous communities across Thailand, leaving only unanswered questions from the military.&nbsp;Echoes of the Beating Drum is an experimental live performance that weaves together interviews, documentation, and Lahu traditional dance. At its heart is a conversation between documentary filmmaker Kai Nottapon Boonprakob and Maitree Chamroensuksakul, who was Chaiyaphum&#39;s mentor and guardian since childhood. Their dialogue about memories of the fallen activist is transmitted live through CCTV cameras installed throughout the space, leading to the ceremonial &#39;Jae Ko&#39;. &mdash;the traditional drum dance of the Lahu people. The performance invites audiences into a temporary space where surveillance cameras serve simultaneously as instruments of oppression and tools of liberation.&nbsp;This performance extends from a documentary project that Nottapon and Maitree have been developing since 2018, in collaboration with Studio Thalamus, using multimedia technology to design the performance. Together, they aim to transform state erasure into an act of remembrance&mdash;for a life lost, for a disappearing indigenous culture. Maitree was a teacher and guardian to Chaiyapoom Pasae since childhood. Maitree taught himself filmmaking using a digital camera received from foreign tourists.
