Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai&rsquo;s first novel in English,The Mountains Sing, presents the full sweep of the Việt Nam War from the perspective of one family who lived through it&mdash;and in the process challenges the dominant narrative of the conflict. Her second novel, Dust Child, is a humane examination of war&rsquo;s long emotional fallout.
