Based on Bram Stoker&rsquo;s horror novel DRACULA (1897) and its famous silent film version NOSFERATU (F.W. Murnau, 1921), Herzog retells the frequently adapted vampire story by linking the imagery of the German classic and his own visual cosmos.In Werner Herzog&rsquo;s remake of F.W. Murnau&rsquo;s NOSFERATU from 1921, Jonathan Harker travels from Wismar to Transylvania to negotiate the purchase of a house with Count Dracula. He spends the night in Dracula&rsquo;s castle and the next morning discovers small red marks on his neck: Dracula is a vampire.Harker flees the castle, but Dracula is already on his way to Wismar. A ship of the dead arrives there: Dracula has killed the crew and is now spreading the plague in the small town. Harker&rsquo;s wife, Lucy, sacrifices herself and gives herself to Dracula. In the first rays of sunlight of the new morning, the vampire dissolves. But Jonathan Harker has become a new kind of vampire and rides off in the daylight to spread the plague across the world.In NOSFERATU, Werner Herzog submits to the rules of the genre, but he employs his own leitmotifs and visual language throughout while drawing on the traditions of German expressionist cinema. While he repeatedly quotes Murnau&rsquo;s work in his visual language and plot, he makes room for his own personal visual expression. &ldquo;I want to reveal these inner landscapes!&rdquo; said Herzog. He is primarily concerned with the incursion of horror into a supposedly safe middle-class world. In all the films he made before NOSFERATU, the filmmaker explained, he was groping his way, but from then on, he gained the inner certainty for future works.In addition, you are in for a treat with Prawit TaengAksorn, a film critic and a professor of Film Critique from various esteemed universities, who will guide you through the intriguing narrative of Dracula, engaging in a conversation under the topic &ldquo;Horror Film History: German Art Influence on Horror Films, Hollywood, and the World&rdquo;. This discourse will involve interpreting films, particularly the reinterpretation of the classic 1922 story of Count Dracula, &ldquo;Nosferatu: Phantom of the Night&rdquo;, which we are presenting for all of you to behold.
